The field notes
A little context for your next step.
PDF Flint compresses PDFs using a server-side Ghostscript engine. Starting compression can upload your document to the server. If that engine is unavailable and returns a 503 response, the tool uses browser optimisation instead; these methods can produce different results.
Choose low, balanced or high compression and compare the downloaded result with your original. Stronger settings can reduce image resolution or introduce visible changes. Savings depend on the document: an image-heavy scan may shrink considerably, while a file that is already optimised may stay the same size or become larger. The results show measured input and output sizes rather than a promised reduction.
You can select up to 10 PDF files at a time, with a maximum of 100 MB per file. Review individual results and any errors before downloading. Keep the original and check important pages, images and small text before sharing the compressed copy.
Select up to 10 PDF files, no more than 100 MB each. Compression can upload them for server processing.
Choose low, balanced or high. Stronger compression can change image quality; start with balanced and compare.
Check the actual file sizes and each result. Download the output and inspect it before sharing.
There is no guaranteed reduction. Image-heavy documents often offer more room for compression than text-only or already optimised files. The output may be smaller, unchanged or larger. Compare the measured file sizes and inspect the result before sharing it.
Yes. Ghostscript can recompress or downsample images, and stronger settings may reduce fine detail. Browser optimisation works differently and can give different results. Keep your original and compare small text, diagrams, images and important pages after downloading.
Not necessarily. Compression normally sends your file to the server for Ghostscript processing. Browser optimisation is attempted when the server engine returns HTTP 503 (unavailable). Read the privacy policy before uploading sensitive documents.
An encrypted PDF may be rejected if the processor cannot read it. If you are authorised and know the password, unlock a copy first, then compress it. Reapply protection afterward if needed and verify the resulting file.
You can select up to 10 PDFs at a time, with a maximum size of 100 MB per file. Large or complex files can take longer or fail. Review each file outcome; a failed file is not a completed result.
